What are the Governors?

Governors are like a board of Directors and make decisions about how a school is run. They meet at least once a term in th school and all parents and staff of the school are welcome to attend and listen to what goes on subject to prior arrangement. However observers are not allowed to contribute views to the meeting, unless invited to do so by the Chair. Some business may be held in a 'closed' session and for such items the observers will be asked to leave the meeting. Governors are appointed to assist- in the main- with the following:

1 To help decide the school's strategy for improvement so that the pupils learn most effectiveley and achieve the highest standards. However it should be stressed that the responsibility for the curriculum plan and the arrangement of classes rests with the Headteacher.

2 To monitor and evaluate the school's effectiveness.

3 To help set the standards of behaviour.

4 interview and select staff.

5 To help to decide how the school budget is spent. School Governors have legal duties, powers and reponsibilities. They can only act as a body and it  must be stressed that they cannot act individually.

Who are School Governors?

1 Parents.

2 A teacher representative- elected by teaching staff. The Head Teacher may or may not be a member of the Governing body.

3 Staff Governor elected by the non-teaching staff.

4 L.A. representatives.

5 Co-opted members who are community representatives.

6 Associate Governors.

Parent governors must have a child in school and are elected to the Governing Body by the parents of the children in the school and serve, as do other Governors, for four years. Parent Governors may bring the views of the parents to the Governing Body, but they speak and act as individuals.

They should not be thought of as delegates or "mouthpiece" of the parents and they do not vote for all parents in general.

They have an equal status in the work of the Governing Body and have voting rights. Parent Governors can make sure that all communications with the parents are informative.

If you interested in becoming a Parent Governor at the next Governing Body elections, please ask the headteacher for details.
